Title of talk: Pilot design strategies for channel estimation in doubly-selective wireless channels

Abstract: High quality channel estimation is very crucial for reliable data transmission in wireless communications.  In this talk, I will discuss about various channel estimation techniques for wireless communications. Specifically, I will focus on some useful pilot design techniques for doubly-selective channels (both time-varying and frequency-selective wireless channels) which are modelled using the the parsimonious basis expansion model (BEM).  Two types of pilot-based channel estimation methods will be presented for the single-carrier single-input-single-output (SISO) communications, one based on data-pilot time-multiplexed design, and the other based on data-dependent superimposed pilot design. Next, multi-carrier communication, specifically, orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) communication will be considered for very high mobility wireless environment (such as high-speed train communications). The challenges in high Doppler channels will be discussed briefly, and some suitable pilot design strategies will be discussed.
